Raccoons are your backyard bandits

Raccoons are stocky mammals with a distinctive black “mask” over their eyes. They are notorious for being homeowners’ backyard bandits rummaging through garbage cans, popping kiddie pools, and generally causing mayhem. They prefer to live in wooded areas near water and natural habitats. Still, in urban areas, raccoons make their homes in empty nooks and crannies around your home or garden, such as underneath porches and within attics and walls. These cute little bandits will eat almost anything, including insects, fruit, vegetables, and small animals, and are best known for raiding garbage cans at night. Raccoons will kill chickens and turkeys, destroy bird nests, and damage gardens or crops. If they get into your home or business, they can ruin a home’s insulation, wood, shingles, electrical wiring, and walls as they try to create their dens. In addition, raccoons have been known to carry Rabies and are aggressive towards pets and humans while defending their territory.
